## About

# Authority Engine

## What this does

Authority is the off-site half of SEO, and it is also a gatekeeper for AI citation. Engines cite sources they recognize and trust, and that recognition is built off your own domain: links from relevant sites, mentions in the places your category reads, and a consistent entity that machines can resolve. This skill audits what authority a brand has and builds more of the kind that matters.

Relevance beats volume every time. One link from a respected source in the category does more than fifty from directories. Earned beats built, because the durable signals are the ones you cannot buy.

## When to use it

Use it for a backlink audit, a link-building or digital-PR plan, anchor or toxic-link analysis, a competitor link gap, or off-site entity and E-E-A-T work. It supports `ai-search-visibility` on recognition and `cited-framework` on the Citation Surface layer.

## Data you pull

- **Ahrefs**: referring domains and their authority, the backlink profile, anchor text distribution, new and lost links, and competitor link profiles for the gap analysis.
- **Brand mention tracking**: unlinked mentions and the sites talking about the category, which are both link and citation opportunities.
- **The competitors' earned coverage**: where they get written about, since that maps the media and sites that cover your space.

## Method

### 1. Profile audit

Read the backlink profile for health, not just size. Look at the mix of referring domain authority, topical relevance, and the ratio of earned to built. A profile heavy on irrelevant or low-quality links is a liability, not an asset.

### 2. Anchor health

Check anchor text distribution. A natural profile is mostly brand and URL anchors with some descriptive ones. A spike in exact-match commercial anchors is a footprint that invites trouble. Flag it.

### 3. Toxic triage, carefully

Identify genuinely harmful links, the spam and clearly manipulative patterns. Disavow is a last resort, not a routine cleanup. Google is good at ignoring junk on its own, and over-disavowing can remove links that were helping. Triage conservatively and document why.

### 4. Competitor link gap

Find the sites linking to several competitors but not to you. Those are the most attainable targets, because the site already covers the category and has linked to peers. Prioritize by relevance, authority, and how reachable the link actually is.

### 5. Build the earned-media plan

Authority you earn outlasts authority you chase. Lead with original research and proprietary data, since data-rich content attracts links and AI citations far above directory-style content. Add expert commentary, useful tools, and genuinely linkable assets. Pitch the sites the gap analysis surfaced.

### 6. Off-site entity and E-E-A-T

Strengthen the signals that establish the brand and its experts as recognized entities: consistent profiles, author bylines on authoritative sites, speaking and contribution footprints, and the mentions that build recognition even without a link. This is the off-site E-E-A-T that AI engines weigh as a gatekeeper.

## Output

An authority plan: the profile's health and risks, anchor and toxic findings with a conservative disavow recommendation only where warranted, a prioritized link-gap target list, and an earned-media plan led by original research. Tie targets to relevance and reach, not raw domain counts.

## Speed to results

Links are slow. Earned coverage takes weeks to months to land and longer to compound into ranking and citation gains. Set that expectation up front. The fast part is fixing a toxic-link risk or shipping a linkable research asset. The payoff is patient.

## Guardrails

- Relevance and authority beat volume. Never chase link counts.
- Disavow is a last resort. Over-disavowing does more harm than the junk would.
- Earned beats built. Original research is the durable lever, and it doubles as AI-citation fuel.
- Authority compounds slowly. Promise patience, not a quick spike.

## Hands off to

`content-engine` and `phd-paper-supervisor` to produce the original research that earns links, `ai-search-visibility` to turn recognition into citations, `cited-framework` for the Citation Surface strategy, and `growth-intelligence` to track referring domains and mentions over time.
