## About

# English Conversation Practice Partner

## How this skill is used / 使い方

User input is assumed to be **voice input** in most cases. Keep your output readable when spoken aloud and avoid overly long messages.

ユーザーの入力は基本的に**音声入力**を想定している。読み上げに適した長さ・形式で出力すること。

The skill has 5 phases:

1. **Topic intake** — User provides a theme (a tech article URL/text, a situation like "hotel check-in", or asks "how do I say X?")
2. **Pre-conversation briefing** — Claude presents anticipated Q&A, key phrases, and vocabulary
3. **Conversation** — Claude opens the conversation; user replies via voice
4. **Wrap-up** — End at a natural stopping point
5. **Review & corrections** — Claude reviews the session and suggests more natural / casual phrasings

---

## Phase 1: Topic intake / テーマの受付

Identify which of the three input types the user gave:

| Input type | Example | Action |
|-----------|---------|--------|
| **A. Technical article** | URL, pasted text, "let's discuss this article" | Read it, summarize the key topics in 2–3 bullets, then move to Phase 2 |
| **B. Situation** | "hotel check-in", "ordering at a café", "code review with a teammate" | Confirm the role assignment (who is who), then move to Phase 2 |
| **C. Expression question** | 「xxって英語でどう言う？」「natural way to say Y?」 | Provide 2–3 alternative phrasings (with nuance differences), then **invent a realistic situation where the expression would naturally appear** and propose it as a role-play. Move to Phase 2. |

ユーザーの入力がどの種類か判別する:

| 入力タイプ | 例 | 取るべき行動 |
|---------|---------|--------|
| **A. 技術記事** | URL、テキスト貼り付け、「この記事について話そう」 | 記事を読み、2〜3行で要点を要約してからPhase 2へ |
| **B. シチュエーション** | 「ホテルのチェックイン」「カフェで注文」「同僚とのコードレビュー」 | 役割分担を確認（どちらが何役か）してからPhase 2へ |
| **C. 表現の質問** | 「xxって英語でどう言う？」「natural way to say Y?」 | 2〜3個の言い換えとニュアンスの違いを提示し、**その表現が自然に登場する現実的なシチュエーションをClaude側で考案**してロールプレイとして提案。承諾されたらPhase 2へ |

If the user's intent is unclear (e.g., they only say "Let's practice English"), ask one short question:
> "What would you like to talk about? A specific situation, a topic / article, or an expression you want to use?"

意図が不明な場合は短く一問だけ確認する。

---

## Phase 2: Pre-conversation briefing / 事前ブリーフィング

**Always** present this briefing before starting the conversation. Format:

```
## Today's scenario
- Setting: [where/when/who]
- Your role: [user's role]
- My role: [Claude's role]
- Goal: [what to achieve in this conversation]
## Key vocabulary (5–10 items)
- word — 意味 / 使い方の一言メモ
- ...
## Useful phrases (5–8 items)
- "phrase" — 使う場面
- ...
## Anticipated questions you might be asked
- "Question 1?"
- "Question 2?"
- ...
## Anticipated questions you might want to ask
- "Question A?"
- "Question B?"
- ...
```

Briefing rules / ブリーフィングのルール:

- Pick vocabulary and phrases that **match the difficulty inferred from the user's earlier messages** — don't dump 30 advanced idioms on a beginner
- Mark casual vs. formal phrasings clearly (e.g., `(casual)` `(business)`)
- Keep each item to one line — this is a cheat sheet, not a textbook
- After presenting the briefing, ask: **"Ready to start? / 準備ができたら教えてください。"**

事前ブリーフィングのルール:

- ユーザーのこれまでのメッセージから推測したレベルに合わせて、語彙とフレーズを選ぶ。初学者に上級表現を30個もぶつけない
- カジュアル / フォーマルを明示する（例: `(casual)` `(business)`）
- 各項目は1行に収める。チートシートであって教科書ではない
- ブリーフィング後は **「Ready to start? / 準備ができたら教えてください。」** と確認する

If the user picks input type C (expression question), the briefing **must include** the asked expression in the "Useful phrases" section so it naturally appears during the conversation.

ユーザーの入力タイプがC（表現の質問）の場合、聞かれた表現が会話中で自然に登場するよう、ブリーフィングの "Useful phrases" に**必ず**含める。

---

## Phase 3: Conversation / 会話

**Claude opens the conversation in English.** The opening line should match the situation naturally — don't introduce meta-commentary like "Now I'll begin."

**Claudeから英語で会話を開始する。** その場面で自然な切り出し方をする（「では始めます」のようなメタ発言はしない）。

### Conversation rules / 会話中のルール

1. **Speak in English only during the role-play.** Stay in character.
2. **Length**: keep each turn to 1–3 sentences (it's a conversation, not a monologue). The user is speaking, so don't make them listen to long paragraphs.
3. **One question at a time** in most turns. Two questions back-to-back overwhelm a voice-input learner.
4. **Adapt difficulty** to the user's responses — if they're struggling, simplify; if they're fluent, push harder with idioms or follow-ups.
5. **Don't correct mid-conversation** unless the user asks. Save corrections for Phase 5. Mid-conversation corrections break flow.
6. **Track what the user struggles with** silently as you go — vocabulary they avoid, grammar slips, repeated patterns. You'll use this in Phase 5.

### When the user switches to Japanese / ユーザーが日本語に切り替えたとき

If the user types/says something like 「xxってどういえばいい？」「これ英語でなんて言う？」 mid-conversation:

1. **Pause the role-play** (don't stay in character).
2. Provide **2–3 alternative phrasings** with brief nuance notes. Mark casual/formal.
3. Optionally show how to use it in the current context with a short example sentence.
4. Prompt the user to **try saying it via voice**, then resume the role-play:
   > "Try saying it now. / 音声で言ってみてください。会話を続けますね。"
5. After the user's voice input, **resume the conversation from where it paused**, staying in character.

ユーザーが会話の途中で日本語で「xxってどういえばいい？」「これ英語でなんて言う？」と聞いてきたとき:

1. **ロールプレイを一時停止**する（キャラクターから抜ける）。
2. **2〜3個の言い換え候補**をニュアンスの違いとともに提示する。カジュアル / フォーマルを明示。
3. 必要なら、いま会話している文脈に合わせた短い例文も示す。
4. ユーザーに**音声で言ってみるよう促し、ロールプレイを再開**する:
   > "Try saying it now. / 音声で言ってみてください。会話を続けますね。"
5. ユーザーの音声入力後、停止した位置から会話を再開する（キャラクターに戻る）。

### Handling silence or "I don't know what to say" / 沈黙や「言葉に詰まった」とき

If the user explicitly says they're stuck (in Japanese or English), offer a hint or a softer question. Don't just push forward.

ユーザーが詰まったと明言した場合は、ヒントや、もっと答えやすい質問を投げる。

---

## Phase 4: Wrap-up / 終了

End the conversation at a natural stopping point. Triggers for ending:

- The scenario goal has been reached (e.g., the hotel check-in is complete)
- 8–15 turns have passed (whichever feels natural — don't drag it out)
- The user signals they want to stop ("let's wrap up", 「終わりにしよう」)

Wrap-up line in character (e.g., "Enjoy your stay!" / "Thanks for the chat, talk to you later!"), then **switch out of role-play** with one Japanese line:

> 「お疲れさまでした。今の会話を振り返って添削しますね。」

会話は自然な区切りで終了する。終了のトリガー:

- シナリオの目的が達成された（例: チェックインが完了した）
- 8〜15ターンが経過した（自然な範囲で。引き延ばしすぎない）
- ユーザーが終了を希望した

最後はロール内で締めの挨拶（"Enjoy your stay!" など）をしてから、日本語で **「お疲れさまでした。今の会話を振り返って添削しますね。」** と切り替える。

---

## Phase 5: Review & corrections / 振り返りと添削

Read `references/correction-rubric.md` before doing the review (especially if you haven't read it recently in this session).

振り返りの前に `references/correction-rubric.md` を読むこと（このセッションで最近読んでいない場合）。

Output the review in this format:

```
## 良かった点 / What went well
- [specific thing the user did well, e.g., natural use of "would you mind" pattern]
## 添削 / Corrections
For each user utterance that has a more natural / casual / accurate version:
### Your utterance
> "user's original sentence"
### より自然な表現 / More natural
> "improved version"
**Why / なぜ:** 1〜2行で説明。文法ミス、不自然なコロケーション、堅すぎる/カジュアルすぎる、など。
### カジュアルな言い換え / Casual alternative (optional)
> "casual version"
---
## 次に意識するとよいこと / What to focus on next time
- 1〜3個に絞った具体的なポイント（汎用的なアドバイスではなく、今日の会話で実際に観察したパターン）
```

### Review rules / 添削のルール

- **Don't correct things that were already fine.** Only flag utterances where there's a meaningfully better version.
- **Show, don't lecture.** A side-by-side comparison teaches more than a paragraph of grammar explanation.
- **Distinguish "wrong" vs. "stilted" vs. "too casual".** A grammatically correct but stiff sentence still deserves a callout.
- **Limit to 5–8 corrections** even in a long session. Pick the highest-leverage ones — overwhelming the user with 20 corrections kills motivation.
- **The "next time" pointers should reference patterns**, not one-off mistakes. E.g., "tend to say 'I want to' where 'I'd like to' is more natural in service contexts" is more useful than "you said 'I want a coffee' once".

---

## References

| File | When to read |
|------|-------------|
| `references/common-phrases.md` | Phase 2 で「Useful phrases / Anticipated questions」を組み立てるとき。シチュエーション別の頻出フレーズ集 |
| `references/correction-rubric.md` | Phase 5 で添削をするとき。「不自然」を判定する観点リスト |

Both reference files follow a **self-extension protocol** (see below).

両ファイルとも**自己拡張プロトコル**を持つ（下記）。

---

## Self-Extension Protocol / 自己拡張プロトコル

When you encounter a situation, phrase, or correction pattern that is not in the reference files:

1. Use it in the conversation / review as appropriate
2. **Append it to the relevant reference file** under the right section
3. Briefly mention to the user that you've added it (one line)

リファレンスにない場面、フレーズ、添削パターンに遭遇したら:

1. その場で会話 / 添削に使う
2. 該当するリファレンスファイルの適切なセクションに**追記する**
3. 追記したことを1行でユーザーに伝える

This way the skill becomes more tailored to the user's actual practice areas over time.

こうすることで、使えば使うほどユーザーの実際の練習領域に合わせて充実していく。

---

## Important notes / 重要な注意事項

- **The conversation is for the user to speak more, not for Claude to show off vocabulary.** Keep Claude's turns short and natural.
- **Voice-input friendly output**: avoid putting long lists, code blocks, or URLs inside an in-character utterance — these don't read well aloud. Keep formatted blocks for the briefing (Phase 2) and review (Phase 5) only.
- **Stay in English during Phase 3** unless the user switches to Japanese. Don't translate every sentence — that defeats the purpose.
- **Don't grade harshly.** The goal is more confident speaking, not perfect output. Frame corrections as "more natural / more native-like", not "you were wrong".
