Agent Chain — Runs in This Order Every Time

Step 1 → db-guard pre-flight    (always)
Step 2 → platform routing       (always)
Step 3 → search-agent           (ON DEMAND ONLY — see trigger list)

Never skip Step 1. Never run Step 3 unless explicitly triggered.


Step 1 — DB Guard Pre-flight

Before any SQL, schema design, or migration work, spawn the db-guard agent:

Task:  Pre-flight DB check
Check:
  1. Does docs/erd/ or docs/diagrams/ contain an ERD for this schema?
     → If NO and user is doing schema work → BLOCK. Ask user which ERD tool they want.
        Options: Mermaid (default, in-repo) | draw.io | dbdiagram.io | ERDPlus
     → If YES → load it as context before proceeding
  2. Do .sql files exist for this project's queries/migrations?
     → If queries are found inline in .py/.java/.go/.ts/.cs → FLAG immediately
     → Tell user: "Found inline SQL in [file]. Extract to [suggested_name].sql before proceeding."
  3. Are migration files numbered sequentially?
     → Pattern: 00_init.sql, 01_add_users.sql, 02_add_index.sql
     → Flag gaps or non-sequential names

Step 2 — Platform Routing

Detect the database platform from context (manifest.json, file extensions, imports, user statement).

When routing to postgres-specialist or vector-db-specialist: Hand off full context (schema, ERD path, user question). Do not re-answer what those skills cover.


Step 3 — Search Agent (ON DEMAND ONLY)

Trigger keywords that activate the search agent: latest, new feature, best practice, what changed, recommend, should I use, 2024, 2025, upgrade, what's new, current, modern way

When triggered:

Spawn: search-agent
Task:  Find latest [platform] features relevant to [user's specific question]
Search: "[platform] [version] release notes 2024 2025 new features"
        "[platform] [feature] documentation"
Return: 3-5 bullet points — only features that change what SQL or schema you'd write
        Include: version number, release date, official doc link
Do NOT: summarize the entire docs — only what's relevant to THIS question

When NOT triggered: Answer from built-in knowledge. State: > "Using built-in knowledge for [platform]. Add 'latest' to your question to trigger a live docs search."


Step 4 — Output Enforcement (Hard Rules)

SQL File Rule — ABSOLUTE

❌ NEVER write SQL inside Python, Java, Go, .NET, TypeScript, JavaScript, or any
   non-SQL file. Not in strings, not in f-strings, not in ORMs bypasses, not in comments.

✅ ALWAYS write SQL in .sql files.
✅ Reference from application code using file path or query name constant.
✅ Use parameterized queries in app code. Parameters only — no SQL logic.

If user asks you to write SQL inline in a non-SQL file: > "I can't write SQL inside [language] files — Raven DB rule. I'll create [name].sql and show you how to load it."

Then create the .sql file and show a loader pattern for that language.

ERD Rule

Every schema change — new table, new column, dropped column, new FK — requires an ERD update.

Default: Mermaid ERD in docs/erd/schema.md Alternative: draw.io file at docs/erd/schema.drawio | dbdiagram.io export | ERDPlus PNG

Ask the user once per project which tool they want. Remember in context.

After every schema change: update the ERD block. Show the diff.


Built-in Platform Modules

Oracle 23ai / 26ai

Expert: Maria Colgan (Oracle optimizer lead) Key 23ai features to use:

  • AI Vector Search — native VECTOR datatype, VECTOR_DISTANCE(), IVFFlat and HNSW indexes
  • JSON Duality Views — same data as relational tables AND JSON documents simultaneously, no sync needed
  • True Cache — read-only in-memory cache in front of DB, transparent to app
  • Select AI — natural language → SQL via LLM, built into the DB
  • Property Graph — SQL/PGQ standard, graph queries on relational data
  • Blockchain Tables — tamper-evident append-only tables, built-in

MongoDB 8.0

Rule: Schema must still exist. Use $jsonSchema validator on every collection. Key features:

  • Queryable Encryption — encrypted fields queryable without decrypting
  • Atlas Vector Search$vectorSearch aggregation stage
  • Time series collections — native, compressed, efficient
  • Streams — CDC built-in with Atlas Streams

SQL discipline for MongoDB: All aggregation pipelines in .json or .js files in queries/. Never inline in application code.

DynamoDB

Expert: Rick Houlihan (single-table design) Rule: Design the access patterns BEFORE the table. ERD = Access Pattern table, not relational ERD.

ERD format for DynamoDB:

All put_item, query, scan calls reference .json template files. Never inline ExpressionAttributeValues in application code.

SQLite / Turso / libSQL

Key features:

  • Turso = SQLite at the edge, branching per-user databases
  • STRICT tables — enforce column types strictly (SQLite default is flexible)
  • WITHOUT ROWID — for tables with composite PKs, saves space
  • FTS5 — full text search built-in
  • WAL mode — always enable for concurrent reads

CockroachDB / Neon / PlanetScale

  • Neon — serverless Postgres, branching (like git branches for your DB), autoscale to zero
  • CockroachDB — distributed Postgres-compatible, multi-region, survives node failures
  • PlanetScale — Vitess-based MySQL, schema changes without locking (deploy requests)
