Choosing the right journal is one of the most consequential decisions in the publication process. A well-matched submission reaches the right audience quickly; a poor match wastes months in desk rejection or misaligned review.

Critical caveats:

• Metrics vary dramatically by discipline — an IF of 3.0 is excellent in humanities, average in biology, and low in biochemistry
• Do NOT compare IF across disciplines
• Many high-quality journals are not indexed (new journals, regional journals) — absence from JCR does not mean predatory
• Metrics should inform, not solely determine, your decision

• High-prestige fully OA (Nature family, Science): USD 9,500–11,500
• Established OA journals (PLOS ONE, PeerJ): USD 1,400–2,400
• Society journals with OA option: USD 1,000–3,500
• Diamond OA: USD 0

APC waivers: Many publishers offer full or partial waivers for authors from low-income countries. Check the journal's waiver policy before assuming cost is prohibitive.

Step 1: Define Your Paper's Profile

Answer these questions before searching:

1. Primary discipline and subfield?
2. Study type (empirical/theoretical/review/case study/methods paper)?
3. Target audience (specialists/interdisciplinary/clinical/policy)?
4. Word count and figure count — does it fit within journal limits?
5. Funder OA mandate — does one apply?
6. Timeline constraints — do you need rapid review?

Procedure: Paste your title, abstract, or key terms. Review top 5–10 suggestions. Do NOT automatically submit to the top result — always verify scope manually.

Step 3: Evaluate Scope Fit

For each candidate journal:

1. Read the Aims & Scope section on the journal homepage (not just the title)
2. Browse recent issues — do your topic and methodology appear?
3. Check the most-cited papers — is your work at a similar level of novelty?
4. Check word limit and format — does your paper fit without major restructuring?
5. Check special requirements — data availability statements, ethics statements, author contribution statements

Step 4: Assess Quality and Standing

1. Is it indexed in PubMed, Scopus, or Web of Science? (Not essential, but indicates recognition)
2. Is the publisher a member of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics)?
3. Is the journal listed in DOAJ (for OA journals)?
4. Is the editorial board composed of recognised researchers?
5. Are published articles clearly peer-reviewed (not just "peer reviewed" claims without process description)?

Resubmission Strategy After Rejection

When a paper is rejected:

1. Read the rejection carefully — desk rejection vs. post-review rejection require different responses
2. Desk rejection: Likely a scope or fit issue. Choose a better-matched journal. Do not revise the paper substantially.
3. Post-review rejection: Reviewers have raised substantive concerns. Address them even if submitting elsewhere — the next journal may use the same reviewers.
4. Identify the next journal — move down one tier or to a specialist journal with narrower scope
5. Address reviewer comments — revise the paper to address the criticisms before resubmitting
6. Decide on reusing text — cover letter to new journal: do NOT mention the prior rejection unless journal policy requires it
7. Consider format change — could the paper be restructured as a letter or brief communication?

Cascade systems: Some publishers (Nature Portfolio, BMJ) offer a cascade service where rejected manuscripts are automatically forwarded to a suitable sister journal with reviewer reports, avoiding repeated review from scratch.
