Introduction Chapter

Structure

Paragraph 1 — The Hook Open with the significance of the topic. Why does it matter? Who cares?

Paragraphs 2–4 — Context and Background Establish the field, the key debates, and the problem your thesis addresses.

The Gap What is missing in our understanding? What has not been studied? Why is this gap significant?

Research Aims and Questions State your aims clearly. If you have research questions, list them. If you have hypotheses, state them.

Theoretical Framework (Brief) Signal the theoretical lens — expanded in later chapter.

Methodology (Brief) Brief indication of approach — detailed in methods chapter.

Contribution What does this thesis offer? Who benefits?

Chapter Outline One paragraph per chapter, summarising its purpose.

Opening Example

> Climate change is reshaping agricultural systems worldwide, with smallholder farmers in the Global South bearing disproportionate impacts. Yet the mechanisms by which these farmers adapt — and the barriers they face — remain poorly understood. This thesis examines adaptation strategies among smallholder coffee farmers in Colombia, asking: What factors enable or constrain adaptive capacity? How do farmers perceive and respond to climate risks? What role do institutional support systems play? Literature Review Chapter

Purpose

Not a summary of "everything written" on the topic. Instead: a critical synthesis that positions your research within existing knowledge.

Integration vs. Summary

Summary (AVOID): > Smith (2018) found X. Jones (2019) found Y. Brown (2020) found Z.

Integration (PREFER): > Scholars have debated the causes of X for decades. Smith (2018) argues that economic factors are primary, while Jones (2019) emphasises cultural influences. Brown (2020) offers a synthesis, suggesting that these factors interact. However, none of these studies considers the role of [your focus] — a gap this thesis addresses.


Theoretical Framework Chapter

When to Include

  • Humanities and theory-heavy social sciences: typically a separate chapter
  • Sciences and applied fields: may be integrated into literature review or introduction

Purpose

To articulate the theoretical lens through which you analyse your data — the concepts, assumptions, and analytical tools that shape your interpretation.

Elements

  1. Theory introduction — What is the theory? Who developed it?
  2. Key concepts — Define and explain the central concepts
  3. Application to your topic — How does this theory illuminate your research problem?
  4. Limitations — What does this theory not explain?

Methodology Chapter

Purpose

To justify and describe how you conducted your research, with enough detail for replication.

Conclusion Chapter

Purpose

To synthesise the thesis's contribution and signal its significance.

  2. Contributions — What does this thesis contribute to knowledge? To practice? To policy?
  3. Reflections — Personal reflections on the research journey (optional but common in UK)
  4. Future Directions — What remains unanswered? What would you do differently?
