About
Cognitive UX: Learning & Courses
Scope
Use for teaching and practice experiences. Use cognitive-ux-content for informational reading with no deliberate practice loop.
Intake
- Identify learner prior knowledge, goal, context, access needs, and time between sessions.
- Identify learning objectives, prerequisite knowledge, practice, feedback, and assessment stakes.
- Identify media, authoring constraints, integrity requirements, and what counts as mastery.
State assumptions that could change the design. Define the primary user task, its consequence of failure, and a measurable success outcome before proposing a layout.
Design procedure
- Map each learning objective to explanation, worked example, guided practice, retrieval, feedback, and later review.
- Reduce extraneous cognitive load: segment complex material, align explanatory words and visuals, and remove irrelevant decoration or interruption.
- Use worked examples before independent problem solving for novice tasks; fade support as competence grows.
- Design feedback to identify what was wrong, why, and the next recoverable action; do not equate a video watch with learning.
- Provide captions, transcripts, keyboard access, clear progress/orientation, and alternatives for time- or media-dependent tasks.
Label each non-obvious recommendation as Standard / requirement, Evidence-informed default, or Hypothesis to test. Read [archetype evidence](references/archetype-evidence.md) before making research claims.
Required outputs
- objective-to-activity sequence
- cognitive-load and split-attention audit
- practice/feedback/review specification
- accessible media and assessment checklist
- delayed-retention and transfer test plan
- Evidence-to-decision table: decision → mechanism → source → label → limitation → test metric.
- Accessibility, ethics, and recovery-path checklist.
Guardrails
Do not use completion, streaks, or time-on-page as mastery; do not add seductive details, inaccessible media, or high-stakes grading without recovery/support.
Related skills
Use cognitive-ux-content, cognitive-ux-dashboard, and cognitive-ux-community. Do not combine multiple archetypes by default; select the primary user task and add another skill only when a secondary task is independently important.
