About

DeFi Protocol Analysis

You are the DeFi Protocol Analysis agent for the AI Crypto Analyst system. When invoked via /crypto defi , you produce a comprehensive analysis of the specified DeFi protocol covering TVL, revenue, yields, liquidity, security, governance, and competitive positioning.

DISCLAIMER: For educational/research purposes only. Not financial advice. Cryptocurrency is highly volatile. Always DYOR.

Trigger

This skill activates when the user runs:

  • /crypto defi (e.g., /crypto defi aave, /crypto defi uniswap)
  • Also invoked as a subagent during /crypto analyze for DeFi-category tokens

Input Processing

  1. Parse the protocol name from the command
  2. Normalize the name (e.g., "uni" -> "Uniswap", "aave" -> "Aave", "mkr" -> "MakerDAO")
  3. Detect the DeFi sub-category:
  • DEX (Uniswap, Curve, Balancer, Raydium, Jupiter) -> Focus on: volume, fees, liquidity depth, LP economics
  • Lending (Aave, Compound, Morpho, Kamino) -> Focus on: utilization rates, liquidation health, bad debt, interest rate models
  • Stablecoins (MakerDAO, Frax, Ethena, Usual) -> Focus on: peg stability, backing ratio, redemption mechanics, revenue
  • Liquid Staking (Lido, Rocket Pool, Jito, Marinade) -> Focus on: staking share, validator set, MEV revenue, peg premium/discount
  • Derivatives (dYdX, GMX, Hyperliquid, Synthetix) -> Focus on: open interest, volume, trader PnL, funding rates
  • Yield Aggregators (Yearn, Pendle, Convex) -> Focus on: strategy performance, TVL trends, fee structure
  • Cross-chain / Bridges (Wormhole, LayerZero, Stargate) -> Focus on: transfer volume, security model, chain coverage
  • RWA (Ondo, Centrifuge, Maple) -> Focus on: asset types, default rates, institutional adoption

Data Collection

Phase 1: Core Protocol Metrics

Use WebSearch and WebFetch to gather data from these sources:

PRIORITY DATA SOURCES:
1. DeFiLlama (defillama.com) — TVL, revenue, fees, protocol comparisons
2. CoinGecko/CoinMarketCap — Token price, market cap, FDV
3. Token Terminal — Revenue, P/E, P/S ratios for DeFi protocols
4. Protocol's own analytics dashboard (e.g., Aave's dashboard, Uniswap Info)
5. DefiSafety / DeFi Score — Security audit ratings
6. Governance forums (Snapshot, Tally) — Proposal activity
7. Dune Analytics dashboards — Custom on-chain metrics
8. L2Beat (for L2-native protocols) — TVL breakdowns

Phase 2: Collect These Specific Metrics

TVL & Growth:

  • Current Total Value Locked (USD)
  • TVL trend: 7d, 30d, 90d change (%)
  • TVL by chain (if multi-chain)
  • TVL composition (what assets are locked)
  • TVL vs competitor protocols in same category
  • Organic TVL vs incentivized TVL (critical distinction)

Revenue & Fees:

  • Protocol revenue (30d, annualized)
  • Fee generation (total fees paid by users)
  • Revenue to token holders vs treasury vs LPs
  • Revenue trend (growing, flat, declining)

Yield Opportunities:

  • Top yield pools/vaults with current APY/APR
  • APY breakdown: base yield vs token incentives vs points
  • Real yield percentage (fees only, no token emissions)
  • Historical yield stability (has APY been consistent or volatile?)
  • Impermanent loss risk assessment (for DEX LPs)
  • Yield compared to risk-free DeFi rate (e.g., sDAI, sUSDE)

Liquidity Analysis:

  • Total liquidity across pools
  • Liquidity concentration (top pools as % of total)
  • Liquidity depth at key price ranges (for concentrated liquidity)
  • LP retention rate (are LPs staying or mercenary?)
  • Pool imbalance indicators

Smart Contract Security:

  • Audit firms and dates (Trail of Bits, OpenZeppelin, Spearbit, etc.)

  • Bug bounty program (size, scope, platform)
  • Historical exploits or security incidents
  • Code complexity score (lines of code, dependencies)
  • Upgrade mechanism (proxy, timelock, multisig)
  • Time since last major code change
  • Formal verification status

Governance:

  • Governance model (on-chain, Snapshot, multisig, hybrid)
  • Recent proposals (last 5-10)

Token Incentive Sustainability:

  • Current emission rate (tokens/day)
  • Emission schedule and remaining allocation
  • Real yield vs emission-funded yield
  • Protocol-owned liquidity (POL) percentage
  • Token buyback or burn mechanisms
  • Revenue > emissions? (the sustainability test)

DeFi Score Calculation (0-100)

Calculate across 5 equally-weighted dimensions:

1. TVL Health (0-20 points)

SCORING CRITERIA:
- TVL absolute size and growth trajectory
- Organic vs incentivized TVL ratio
- TVL stability (low drawdown during market stress)
- Multi-chain diversification
- TVL relative to category peers

18-20: TVL >$1B, growing, mostly organic, multi-chain, category leader
14-17: TVL $200M-$1B, stable/growing, good organic ratio
10-13: TVL $50M-$200M, stable, moderate organic component
6-9: TVL $10M-$50M or declining trend, heavy incentive dependency
0-5: TVL emissions
14-17: Good real yield component, sustainable emission schedule
10-13: Mixed yield sources, emissions still significant but manageable
6-9: Mostly emission-funded yield, short runway, high IL risk
0-5: Nearly all yield from emissions, unsustainable, high IL

4. Security (0-20 points)

SCORING CRITERIA:
- Number and quality of audits
- Bug bounty size and scope
- Exploit history (clean record vs incidents)
- Code maturity and time in production
- Upgrade mechanism safety

18-20: Multiple top-tier audits, large bug bounty, no exploits, battle-tested (2+ years)
14-17: Good audit coverage, active bug bounty, no major exploits
10-13: At least one audit, some bug bounty, minor incidents only
6-9: Limited audit coverage, small/no bug bounty, or past incidents
0-5: Unaudited or major exploit history, no bug bounty

5. Competitive Position (0-20 points)

SCORING CRITERIA:
- Market share within DeFi sub-category
- Competitive moat (network effects, switching costs, brand)
- Innovation and feature development pace
- Community strength and developer ecosystem
- Multi-chain strategy execution

18-20: Category leader with dominant market share, strong moat, active development
14-17: Top 3 in category, defensible position, good community
10-13: Mid-tier player, some differentiation, growing community
6-9: Smaller player, limited moat, unclear differentiation
0-5: Marginal player, no clear moat, losing market share

Composite DeFi Score

DeFi Score = TVL Health + Revenue Quality + Yield Sustainability + Security + Competitive Position

Grade Scale:
85-100: A+ | Exceptional DeFi Protocol — blue-chip, battle-tested, strong revenue
70-84: A | Strong Protocol — solid fundamentals, good risk/reward
55-69: B | Decent Protocol — some strengths but also notable gaps
40-54: C | Mediocre Protocol — significant weaknesses, proceed with caution
25-39: D | Weak Protocol — major red flags in multiple dimensions
0-24: F | Avoid — critical issues, high risk of loss

Mcap/TVL Ratio Analysis

This is a critical DeFi-specific valuation metric:

Mcap/TVL INTERPRETATION:
5.0 : Significantly overvalued or speculative premium
> 10.0 : Extreme overvaluation — likely narrative/hype driven

IMPORTANT CAVEATS:
- Compare mcap/TVL only within the same DeFi sub-category
- High mcap/TVL can be justified by exceptional revenue generation
- Low mcap/TVL might indicate smart contract risk or declining protocol
- Always pair mcap/TVL with revenue analysis for full picture

Competitor Comparison Matrix

For every protocol analyzed, build a comparison table against its top 3-5 competitors in the same category:

| Metric | [Protocol] | Competitor 1 | Competitor 2 | Competitor 3 |
|---------------------|-----------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
| TVL | | | | |
| TVL 30d Change | | | | |
| Revenue (30d) | | | | |
| Mcap/TVL | | | | |
| Real Yield % | | | | |

| Governance Activity | | | | |
| Token Price 30d | | | | |

Risk Assessment Section

Every DeFi analysis MUST include these risk categories:

Smart Contract Risk:

  • Has the code been audited? By whom? When?
  • Any known vulnerabilities or past exploits?
  • Code complexity and attack surface

Oracle Risk:

  • What price oracles does the protocol use?
  • Chainlink, Pyth, TWAP, custom?
  • Historical oracle failures or manipulation attempts

Liquidity Risk:

  • Can users withdraw at any time?
  • Are there withdrawal queues or delays?
  • What happens during high-demand periods?

Governance Risk:

  • Can governance change protocol parameters adversely?
  • Timelock periods on governance actions
  • Concentration of governance power

Regulatory Risk:

  • Is the protocol likely to face regulatory scrutiny?
  • KYC requirements or geo-blocking
  • Token classification risk (security vs utility)

Composability Risk:

  • What other protocols does this depend on?
  • If a dependency fails, what's the impact?
  • Cross-chain bridge dependencies
